God Who Is Able

“Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us.” — Ephesians 3:20 (NKJV)

To be able is to possess the power, capacity, and competence to accomplish a task or handle a situation successfully. Before an athlete is allowed to compete, it must be established that they are fit and able. Every team that qualifies for the World Cup is expected to compete at a high level. Likewise, before someone is entrusted with a job, an employer must be satisfied that they are capable of performing it.

When we approach God, we are comforted by the assurance that He is able to meet every need. Once, two blind men came to Jesus seeking healing, and He asked them, “Do you believe that I am able to do this?” “Yes, Lord,” they replied. Then He touched their eyes and said, “According to your faith let it be done to you” (Matthew 9:28–29).

On another occasion, a man suffering from leprosy came to Jesus and pleaded, “If you are willing, you can make me clean.” Jesus reached out His hand, touched the man, and said, “I am willing. Be clean!” Immediately, the leprosy left him and he was cleansed (Mark 1:40–42). The leper did not doubt Jesus’ power; he questioned His willingness. Yet Christ demonstrated both His ability and His compassion.

God is able to meet every need, turn around every situation, and fulfill every promise. Abraham was willing to sacrifice Isaac because “he considered that God was able even to raise him from the dead” (Hebrews 11:19). When the angel Gabriel told Mary that she would conceive and give birth to Jesus while still a virgin, she wondered how this could be. The angel replied, “Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be unable to conceive is in her sixth month. For nothing will be impossible with God” (Luke 1:36–37).

Perhaps today you are facing a situation that seems impossible. It could be the restoration of a job or business opportunity that was unfairly taken from you. It may be a desire to have a child, the resources needed to start a project, or a challenge that appears beyond your strength and wisdom.

Whatever the need, God is able. He raised Lazarus from the dead, parted the Red Sea for the Israelites, and conquered death through the resurrection of Jesus Christ. There is nothing beyond His power. Therefore, look to Him, trust Him, and place your confidence in His unfailing ability. The God who has done great things in the past is still able to do great things today.

Prayer

Lord Almighty Father, I bring all my present needs before You, knowing that You are able to provide and deliver far more abundantly than I can ask or imagine. Strengthen my faith to trust You completely, for all power belongs to You. Help me to rest in the assurance that nothing is impossible for You. In Jesus’ name I pray!
