God the Helper

“May He send you help from the sanctuary and grant you support from Zion.” — Psalm 20:2

Being helped is a blessing everyone desires at some point in life. Imagine having a tyre puncture on a highway without a spare wheel. You would certainly appreciate the hands that stop to lift you out of that situation.

Yet sometimes people resist being helped, viewing it as a sign of weakness. However, life has moments when everyone needs a helping hand. For example, if you submit an application for travel documents and later discover that a key requirement is missing, you would appreciate someone who points out the mistake and helps you correct it.

God is in the business of helping His people in times of need. The widow of Zarephath had reached the end of her resources and resigned herself to death, saying, “I don’t have any bread—only a handful of flour in a jar and a little olive oil in a jug… that we may eat it—and die” (1 Kings 17:12). Yet God sent Elijah, who gave her divine instruction that turned scarcity into supernatural provision.

At other times, God’s help comes as guidance. When the wise men were searching for the birth of Christ, God led them by a star until they reached their destination. “When they saw the star, they were overjoyed” (Matthew 2:10–11).

For us to experience God’s help, we must acknowledge our limitations and approach Him in faith, trusting that He is our Helper. A centurion once came to Jesus seeking help for his servant who was suffering terribly (Matthew 8:5–6). Jesus responded to his faith and healed the servant, showing that those who trust in Him receive His help.

Perhaps you are facing a situation that seems impossible despite all your efforts. This is the time to bring it to God. He helps in many ways—sometimes by giving wisdom to manage a crisis, and other times by bringing people into our lives for support, just as He did for Paul when his followers helped him escape by lowering him in a basket through an opening in the wall (Acts 9:25).

The same God is still at work today. Take your need to Him, and He will come through to help, guide, and lead you into victory.

Prayer

Lord Almighty, Father God, I come to You acknowledging my need for Your help. In every situation that is beyond my strength, I ask You to intervene. Make a way where there seems to be no way, and strengthen me where I am weak. I trust in Your power to deliver and sustain me. In Jesus’ name I pray
