"The Lord makes firm the steps of the one who delights in him; though he may stumble, he will not fall,  for the Lord upholds him with his hand" - Psalm 37:24-5 (NIV). 

Can you imagine a situation where a stranger meets a girl. He tells her there is a lad out there looking for a bride. So he waits. And the girl says, "I am willing to go!"

Of course you may be thinking of a broker who goes out to pluck wives from nowhere for lonely guys out there. You might also imagine this was some loose girl quick to desert her home. But you would be dead wrong. The girl here was none other than Rebekah. She was "The daughter of Bethuel son of Nahor.. (Gen 24:47).

The story here is that when Abraham was getting up in years he sent out his servant to procure a wife for his son, Isaac, among his people he had left behind. This was one wise servant who dedicated the journey to the Lord. Once he approached his destiny he "prayed, “Lord, God of my master Abraham,  make me successful today, and show kindness to my master Abraham" (vv 12).

He made a stop at a village well and lo behold here he meets Rebekah. So, without waste, he proposes for the guy back home. Rebekah believed and led the stranger to her home who pleaded for her hand. But her father Laban was all on guard. “Let’s call the young woman and ask her about it.” So they called Rebekah and asked her, “Will you go with this man?” "I will go,” she said. So they sent their sister Rebekah on her way, along with her nurse and Abraham’s servant and his men (vv 58-59).

Rebekah certainly took a step of faith. And her union with Isaac was a successful one, giving birth to Jacob, the father of the Israelites. This was not something she could have anticipated then. She went out in faith.

There are those faith steps the Lord would have us take too. Not everything is clear and from the look of it you might seem to be out of your mind. But then because the Lord is in it, you move out and He rewards that step of faith with a bounty harvest. One whose sheer breadth and scale none could have imagined. By the way it still happens today.

Of course you know your circumstances. But if you know the Lord is calling you out to embark on some great journey, and everything all around appears fuzzy, folks think you are out of your mind, just know Rebekah was in no less the same shoes, and look what happened! Take a step of faith.

Prayer for Today: Lord Father God of Abraham, maker of heaven and earth, I look to you as I take a step of faith that you may fullfil your promises for me, this I pray in Jesus's name.

    One of the most moving Christian song ever written is, “Its well with my soul!” To hear it sung in cathedrals, concerts or at funerals, always leaves many with goose bumps. It has uplifted many through the most difficult of moments, soothing their weary spirit.

    It’s coming into being in many ways show how God so often uses difficult situations to bless so many. In 1871 Horatio Spafford, was one of the wealthiest lawyers, based in Chicago. He was also a devout Christian, along with his wife Ann, and their four daughters. But early in 1871 came the Great Fire of Chicago that destroyed Spafford’s sizable investment.

    Devastated from the loss, Spafford, seeking to recover, two years later, decided to go for a holiday in Europe. But at the last minute he was detained by business, letting Ann and his four daughters to proceed, hoping to join them. No sooner had they left when the ship in which they were had an accident and sank within minutes. All the four children drowned, though Anna survived.

    Spafford on receiving the news decided to go and pick up Ann. As he got to the spot where the ship had sunk, in his despair came the words that have brought respite to so many, through generations. “When peace like a river attendeth my way. When sorrows like sea billows roll Whatever my lot, Thou hast taught me to say It is well, it is well with my soul... Let this blest assurance control That Christ (yes, He has) has regarded my helpless estate, And has shed His own blood for my soul. It is well...With my soul..
    It is well, it is well with my soul.”

    It is said as Ann saw her daughters going down, she said, “God gave me four daughters. Now they have been taken from me. Someday I will understand.” And, indeed, “It is well with my soul” was God’s gift to all of mankind through a tragedy.

    Prayer for today: Lord Father God of heaven, sometimes through tragedies, it is difficult to understand or appreciate the moment; but as the song goes, whatever the difficulty may be, “Its well with my soul” for you are with me, no matter! This I pray in Jesus’ name!
