You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart” (Jer 29:13)

There are people who spend incredible time and effort searching for God. Does God exist? If so, where! Some resort to books of philosophy and science where they pore through looking for a clue. Others engage in spirited debates deflecting every argument with their knowledge. Some wish that maybe they could have a “near death experience” to get a glimpse of the creator. And more!

Now ( and this may dissapoint some) the first way to find God is to have a childlike faith. “Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these”    (Mathew 19: 14). Of course, as we all know, the little ones will not give themselves the headache of “cross examining” facts. But God reveals Himself deeply to them!

Knowing ( or finding) God is not a right, as some think. Its a privilege. “All things have been committed to me by my Father. No one knows who the Son is except the Father, and no one knows who the Father is except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him” ( Luke 10:22). Like a Grand chess player; it is the Creator with all the trump cards. At his pleasure, God chooses what part of Him to reveal or none at all!

What though God has given us is if we serve Him more then He can decide to show more of His likeness to the deserving. While on occasion God may reveal Himself to the un deserving, including the skeptic to make a point, the surest way of finding God is deepening your relation with Him through obedience and service.

Finally, if God decides to reveal Himself, it is He who decides how far. The Apostle Paul was one person who in his earthly life got to know more about God. Refering to himself in second person he writes, “I know a man in Christ who fourteen years ago was caught up to the third heaven. Whether it was in the body or out of the body I do not know—God knows. And I know that this man—whether in the body or apart from the body I do not know, but God knows— was caught up to paradise and heard inexpressible things, things that no one is permitted to tell”’ (2 Cor 12: 1-4). Then Paul offered a caution, “But I refrain, so no one will think more of me than is warranted by what I do or say, or because of these surpassingly great revelations. Therefore, in order to keep me from becoming conceited, I was given a thorn in my flesh, a messenger of Satan, to torment me” ( vv 6-7).

What had happened to Paul is that God revealed Himself a bit. Note, never the full length and breadth of His entire vast nature. Also, God strapped a certain “gag” around Paul- such that he could not become “boastful”!

Do you really want to know God! Have the simple faith of a child. Serve God deeply. And then, of His choosing and time, God, will decide how much and far He blesses you with His knowledge of Him!

Prayer today: Lord Father God of Abraham, maker of heaven and earth, for all my desire to know you, I accept you with the faith of a child, and in serving you, bless me with more of your knowledge, this I pray in Jesus’s name.

“And I in righteousness I shall see your face; when I awake, I shall be satisfied with seeing your likeness” (Psalm 17:15)

One of the defining aspects we see in the life of the Lord Jesus Christ is that He began the day with prayer. “Very early in the morning while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed” (Mark 1:35). As he was always surrounded by crowds and after such a busy day before of preaching and engaging the Pharisees in debates this must have been a therapeutic moment for Christ when he would have some good time to himself.

But there was also more. For Jesus being away in a secluded place would also mean a chance to pour out His heart to God, meditate in quietness, plan for the day ahead and listen to the Father. Jesus must have looked up to this moment every day knowing its benefits. Conversations with His Father must have been real and intimate, bringing a certain soothing and uplifting of His spirit. You do not wake up and stick to something on a daily basis that is a drag – this must have been his best time of the day!

Martin Luther the leader of the protestant reformation is reputed to once have said, “I have so much to do that I shall spend the first three hours in prayer.” Here is the point. In the olden days before the arrival of locomotive transport those who were setting out for a long journey on foot had to start early with the first cock crow before the punishing sun came out. One of the things they had to start with also was a good meal, which was fuel needed to give them energy through the long walk to their destiny.

There are no rules about waking up to pray as first thing- or even saying prayer at a defined hour of the day. God is everywhere and ever with us. He is accessible at any time of the day. But there is something special about prioritizing our lives that the first thing we do is to talk to God. Just like the early traveller we need fuel, for the long day ahead!

Prayer for today: Lord Father God of Abraham, maker of heaven and earth, what a joy and privilege to make time at the start of any day, talk and hear from you, for the power I need through the day, this I pray in Jesus’ name!
