“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness”- 1 John 1:9

Everyone has a past. Sometimes that past becomes a limitation, holding us back from moving forward. In some countries, a felony is permanently marked on a person’s identity record, restricting opportunities for the rest of their life. A person who has abused children is labeled a child offender, and that label can seal their future.

Yet when we look at the Bible, it is striking how God used people whose lives could easily have been permanently marked by shame. Take Moses. When he came of age and saw the harsh treatment of his Hebrew people, he took matters into his own hands and killed an Egyptian. Word spread quickly. “When Pharaoh heard of this, he tried to kill Moses, but Moses fled… and settled in Midian” (Exodus 2:15). He carried the label of a wanted murderer.

David fared no better. After years of struggle, he finally secured the throne of Israel. But while his soldiers were away at war, he remained idle. One day he saw a married woman, Bathsheba, and was overcome with lust. He arranged for her husband Uriah to be killed in battle and then took the widow as his own (2 Samuel 11). David earned the labels of both adulterer and murderer of an innocent man.

Then there is the Apostle Paul. Early in life his hatred of believers in Christ knew no bounds. When Stephen boldly declared that Jesus was the Messiah, Saul supervised his execution. “And Saul approved of their killing him” (Acts 8:1). The blood of the first Christian martyr was on his hands.

But ours is a God of grace. Where the world labels and condemns forever, God transforms. A humbled Moses was later called to lead the Hebrews out of Egypt toward the Promised Land. When David repented of his sin with Bathsheba, God did not cast him aside; He forgave and restored him. And a repentant Saul became Paul—commissioned as the Apostle to the Gentiles after he acknowledged Jesus as Messiah.

Many people today feel that their sins are beyond forgiveness. They are weighed down by past failures. Some feel defeated by the labels the world has stuck on them, labels that seem to close every door of opportunity.

Thankfully, we serve a God of grace.

If God could take a murderer, an adulterer, and a persecutor of the church and turn them into instruments of His purpose, then what about you? Our God looks beyond the wrongs we have committed. He redeems, restores, and gives us a bright future.

Reflection: Is there anything from my past still holding me back and making me feel unforgiven? Today I surrender everything to God.

Prayer: Almighty Father God, what a blessing it is to know we have a God of grace who looks beyond our past, fully forgives us, restores us, and charts a bright future for us. Where the world rejects and abandons, You embrace us and count us among Your forgiven and blessed children. I give You thanks and return all the glory to You. In Jesus’ name I pray!
