“And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus” - Philippians 4:19 (NIV)

Every life has needs. Our needs may vary from physical to emotional needs. There are needs which are basic: food, water and shelter. Some needs may be higher, as the philosopher Abraham Maslow observed, looking out for personal fulfillment. One of the reason why every life has to wake up and work is to help earn the means to take care of our daily needs.

Here, in today’s verse, the Apostle Paul gave a word of hope to a church that had just ministered to him through their gifts. If they had concern that where they had spared some of their resources to support his work, they need not worry, because God would bless them even more.

Paul is also aware that our lives can be restless, perhaps pressed with worry, whenever we are concerned that our needs are not being met. He reminds these believers that the God they believe in, is the one who has said, “for every animal of the forest is mine, and the cattle on a thousand hills.  I know every bird in the mountains, and the insects in the fields are mine.  If I were hungry I would not tell you, for the world is mine, and all that is in it” (Psalm 50: 10- 12).

The point here is that when we wake up and do wonder how our needs will be met let us be reminded that the God we believe in is the owner of this earth.  As Psalm 24:1 says, “The earth is the LORD's, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it...”

Today, if there are needs pressing on your heart, do not therefore look elsewhere, do not suffer yourself with needless worry; rather come to the one who owns all the resources there are to meet your needs.

Prayer for today: Lord Father God of Abraham, creator of heaven and earth, today I come to you in confidence, bringing to you all my needs, assured by your word that you will and have met them because the world and the fullness of it are all yours!
